I have one of those jobs that require frequent moves. My family has been very patient with me, but at some point my husband got tired of constantly having to help me pack. When I say that I have to move a lot, I mean at least once every couple of years. I have lived all over the country and have even lived overseas a couple of times. Each time we move we have to get used to a new place and my kids have to adjust all over again.
I did not want to keep packing or making my kids help pack either, to tell the truth. We enjoyed learning about new places, but began to dread the weeks before the next move. We needed to find another way.
I have always been the type of person to take care of things myself. I was just raised that way. No one ever handed me anything and our family worked hard for everything we had. I even worked through college and paid for what the scholarships didn’t on my own. Once I turned 18, I never asked my parents for another dime. I’m sure they would have helped me, but I wanted to make it on my own.
This made hiring someone to pack boxes and load our truck difficult for me. I had two good legs and a strong back; so I believed I should do the work myself and that my husband and kids should do their share too. After a few years of this though, it was time to let someone else do the hard work.
I and my family make many friends wherever my work takes us. We were never able to have going away parties, though. We were always packing up to leave in the last weeks before the move. I remember the first time I hired a moving company and got to have a going away party. It was great. I decided from that point on that I would stop packing and start spending my last days at my old home with my friends.
Moving is always a big job. Moving frequently just magnifies the tedium of the whole experience. I have found my experiences to be much more pleasant since I decided to start letting a moving company do all of the hard work. I am free to get excited about our next home and adventure.
